CBD Carrier Oils

Different carrier oils can be used for CBD oil, each with their own unique benefits.

Active ingredients are mixed with what we call ‘carrier oils’. Hemp extracts are a resin-like substance, or a crystalline powder once isolated. Dissolving them in oils makes application on skin or sublingual easier at room temperature. Oils are the most basic and familiar form of CBD on the market historically.

We have a fast lead time for standard carrier oils and an extensive network for sourcing custom oils. Let us develop and blend unique combinations for you, with the option of adding any legal cannabinoid or other fat soluble compound.

Best selling carrier oils

Most CBD oils are based on:

  • MCT oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Olive oil

Although there are many more, these three widely available oils are very useful for skincare and food supplements, and we view them as superfoods.

CBD strength in oil

We recommend not exceeding 30% CBD concentration in oil. It is possible to blend products to 35%, even close to 40%, but a lot of this CBD will not stay in solution once the product cools down. This can result in undesired crystallisation around the neck of the bottle during the winter months or if the product is in cold storage.

Beneficial properties

We will review the beneficial properties of the most common carrier oils here:

Benefits

MCT Coconut Oil

MCT oil is neutral and safe to use for skincare or food supplements. MCT may have its own benefits as a brain fuel and may help prevent degenerative brain conditions. MCT oil is the most stable oil of the 3 standard oils, having an extremely long shelf life.

Benefits

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids, and produces them in the right ratio for human absorption.. It has a nutty flavour and a rich mouth feel. Hemp seed oil and CBD can be harvested from the same plant, making them an obvious choice for many brands historically. The trade-off for using hemp seed oil is that not everybody enjoys the flavour, and as hemp seed oil is not naturally shelf-stable, it is at risk of getting rancid after contamination.

Benefits

Olive Oil

Olive oil has many naturally occurring beneficial compounds, like Hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleuropein. These healthy Phenols have powerful antioxidant properties. The benefits of olive oil diminish once the product has been opened and exposed to oxygen. Olive oils have the highest capacity for diluting cannabinoids among the standard oils.
